“Midnight Special”: Film review

It’s hard to take Adam Driver seriously since his pathetic Kylo Ren character in Star Wars, but I was mostly able to overlook this in order to enjoy this well-acted story of alien genetic intervention or cross-breeding, a religious fanatic cult, competing US intelligence interests looking to weaponize just about anything they can, and parents desperate to both protect their son and give him whatever it is he truly needs.
While watching this on the plane I looked to my left and saw the woman next to me watching the (bad) alien invasion movie “The 5th Wave,” and the woman next to her watching the classic “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” Aliens are in the air.
