“Whale Rider”: Film review

Keisha Castle-Hughes plays a young Maori girl Paikea who feels chosen by destiny to be the next leader of her tribe, but who must struggle against a grandfather bound up by older patriarchal taboos and traditions and unwilling to recognize her.
This is actually quite a beautiful movie, and Castle-Hughes is a captivating and convincing Maori girl despite being Australian.
Lisa Gerrard of Australia’s Dead Can Dance supplies an ethereal soundtrack.
