I resisted this film because it looked a bit ridiculous, but in fact it’s not so bad. Saoirse Ronan is a convincing new arrival to New York, overwhelmed and overawed and homesick. This film reminded me of my first year in New York – it’s a rough ride. Upon returning home though, she realized, as I did, that in fact New York is home.
The small-town provincialism of some of the characters – like the old bag of a shopkeeper running her little empire and twisting barbs of gossip in an attempt to control those around her – made me want to reach into the film and deliver a few aul slaps.
