“Goodnight, Mommy”: Film review

Austrian film “Ich Seh, Ich Seh” (“I see, I see”), released in the US as “Goodnight, Mommy,” is the story of two young twins struggling to recognize their mother who is recovering from a plastic surgery operation, while their mother struggles to find her compassionate maternal instinct. You get the sense that more than her face has changed, and there are hints of an accident and separation at play. While you can sympathize with the mother, you also feel for the two boys, feeling alone and afraid with this woman whose identity they doubt. As their doubts ratchet up into frank disbelief, they take drastic and alarming action, leading to a frantic fatal conclusion as the final revelation is made.
